Dear Wonderful Donors

Postby baby_blessings » Mon Jan 19, 2009 9:38 pm

First of all, thanks for the extraordinary gifts that you offer those of us looking to become parents! --I'm very glad that you've posted this question because it is a very important one that I wish more donors would consider.
-- I believe in open donation for many well-thought, well-researched and heart-felt reasons. (I will preface that with the proviso that you choose an top-calibur agency to work with so that your interests are looked after.)
1. Yes, it's nice to have a donor that looks like you. Lots and lots of photos are important, and at all ages.
2. However, it is even more important to be able to find out if the donor possesses all the qualities, aptitudes, health, and million and one things that are even more important than just looks- that you wish you could pass on to your child yourself. ( And I am a former model. Maybe its that I'm also a MENSA that makes this point on of the most important to me.)
3. This is the most important gift you will ever give. It should be given the reverance it deserves. Wouldn't you want to know that you are being chosen for just how special you are? I can appreciate that varying degrees of contact will be your comfort zone. Meeting your Intended Parents is a great way to ensure that you'll go through this process feeling good about it.
4. Medical History! I've worked in genetics and can't stress enough how important this point is- IP's need to be able to have ALL of your family and personal medical history, and future updates on family and medical history for the sake of their child. We are making great strides in preventing deadly diseases IF WE KNOW ABOUT THE PREDISPOSITION FOR THEM GENETICALLY.
5. The agencies that have the worst reputations favor closed donations. Why? Because open donation makes them work harder, more honestly, and treat each donation with quality care. The agencies that have the worst reputations just want to treat their donors kind of like a breeding mill- quickly match, churn them out for the next... in it for the bucks only.
6. This is a not often thought of issue that is getting more and more press as the children resultant of egg donation get older- incest. Put yourself in the shoes of the child/ adult that results from this egg donation. How would you feel about marrying and having children, not knowing if you are possibly related to your husband!!!
7. Again, putting yourself in the child's shoes- what if you want to meet the wonderful woman who made your life possible? What if you couldn't feel complete without it?
-- I hope this helps. And I hope that it helps you feel more comfortable about open donation. Bless you for the precious gifts you give.
