Looking for someone in similar situationI'm a young college student from Michigan interested in donating but am still hesitant about the process. I was wondering if anyone out there has had a similar experience. Does the process hurt? Would it affect my attending classes? Are people looking for specific characteristics or willing to pay more for them? Also, what are the side effects?
similar situationHey there! I had most of the same questions before I decided to donate. Depending on where you do your monitoring, it may affect your ability to make early classes on time. I have to travel about 1.5 hours to be monitored every morning for about a week. However, places are different. Most places do monitoring before 10am, so results are back the same day. The procedure is done while you are under and takes about 15 minutes. I have donated twice, and both times I have gone on with normal life a couples hours after the procedure. You may feel a little crampy for 2-3 days, but nothing bad at all.
As far as the compensation, I believe it varies between agencies and states. In IL, where I donate, the compesation rate is $7000, no matter what. You may find a higher rate if you do it personally, but you won't have the security of someone looking out for YOUR needs. Some agencies require a college degree, while others just require you to be healthy with no family history of disease. I would recommend contacting an agency in your area to discuss the whole thing. Most agencies are more than willing to have an informational meeting with potential donors. If you have any further questions please feel free to contact me at k2johnson@hotmail.com. HOpe I helped. :) KElly
